Recent Offenses in Charles County Schools: THC, Cannabis, and Weapons – News Update

CHARLES COUNTY, Md.—In a series of troubling incidents, multiple cases of student misconduct have come to light in various Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) over the past week. The offenses range from possession of THC vaping devices, cannabis, and weapons to assaults. The Charles County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) and school resource officers are actively investigating these incidents, with disciplinary actions in progress as per the CCPS Student Code of Conduct.

Incident Reports

Smallwood Middle School

On December 16, a student was caught with a vape device containing THC. The student is now facing disciplinary actions after receiving a juvenile civil citation. PFC Miedzinski is leading the investigation.

Thomas Stone High School

– Cannabis Possession and Assault: A student was found with 28 grams of cannabis in a school bathroom on December 16. When confronted, the student tried to escape, resisted, and even kicked a school administrator and a school resource officer. The student was charged with assault and cannabis possession, receiving a civil citation. Disciplinary measures are being taken by CCPS. PFC Ondrish is handling the case.
– THC Vaping Device: On December 20, a 19-year-old student was caught smoking a THC vape device in the restroom. The student faces disciplinary action after being charged with an adult civil citation. PFC Ondrish is investigating this incident.

La Plata High School

On December 16, a student physically assaulted another student, causing injuries that required medical treatment. The aggressor will be charged with assault on a juvenile offense report and will face disciplinary actions. M/Cpl. Burger is leading the investigation.

JP Ryon Elementary School

Following a tip, a 9-year-old student was found with a knife on school premises on December 17. Due to Maryland law, the student was not charged but will face disciplinary consequences. PFC Hancock conducted the investigation.

Westlake High School

During an administrative search prompted by the smell of cannabis on December 20, a Youth Engagement Advocate discovered a knife in a student’s possession. The student will be facing charges and disciplinary actions. PFC Joffe is handling the investigation.

CCSO and CCPS Response

The CCSO and CCPS are working together to ensure a safe school environment for all students. Each incident is being addressed following Maryland law and the CCPS Student Code of Conduct.
