LEONARDTOWN, MD – Thomas Campbell Bolling Von Goetz, 56, of Avenue, is facing a slew of charges after causing disturbances at two St. Mary’s County churches on Christmas Eve, leading to his arrest on December 26, 2024.

Disturbances at Two Churches

The chaos began at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Avenue during Mass on December 24. Von Goetz entered the church and dropped an onion in the aisle, disrupting the service. A concerned parishioner followed him outside, where Von Goetz then assaulted the parishioner and threw tangerines at them. The situation escalated quickly.

Later that evening, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Leonardtown, Von Goetz poured whiskey into the holy water during Midnight Mass and threatened to harm parishioners. As attendees tried to remove him from the church, Von Goetz attempted to strike individuals with a whiskey bottle. Parishioners managed to detain him until deputies arrived and took him for a medical evaluation at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital.

Charges Filed

Von Goetz now faces an array of charges, including Second-Degree Assault, Disorderly Conduct, Defacing Religious Property, Religious Crime Against a Group, Obstructing a Religious Exercise, Threat of Mass Violence, and Disturbing the Peace. He is currently held at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center awaiting a court appearance.

Community Reaction and Legal Implications

The incidents have sent shockwaves through the local community, especially given the timing during Christmas Eve services. Disrupting a religious gathering is a serious offense, with Maryland laws imposing enhanced penalties for crimes targeting religious institutions or groups. The Sheriff’s Office underscores its dedication to safety and order, particularly in places of worship, urging the community to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behavior.

Public Assistance

Authorities have not revealed a motive for Von Goetz’s actions, prompting a call for anyone with additional information to contact the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.
