Animal Safety Alert Issued for Calvert County During Cold Snap
The Calvert County Department of Public Safety has issued an urgent animal safety alert in response to the upcoming severe cold temperatures predicted for the region. Starting from Friday, January 3, through Friday, January 10, all animal owners and custodians are required to take specific measures to ensure the well-being of their pets and livestock during this extreme weather event.
Critical Safety Measures for Animal Owners
During this period, it is crucial for all animal owners and custodians to adhere to the following safety guidelines to protect their beloved pets and livestock:
• Dogs and Cats: Pets should be brought indoors. If pets must remain outside, they must have access to a sturdy shelter that is heated or positioned to shield them from the cold winds to maintain their body temperature.
• Livestock and Farm Animals: Animals must have access to adequate protection from the weather to sustain their core body temperature.
• Food and Water:
• Livestock and farm animals should be provided with additional food to meet their increased caloric needs in cold weather.
• All animals kept outdoors must have access to clean, unfrozen water at all times.
• Monitoring: Animals outdoors must be regularly checked for any signs of distress to ensure their well-being.
Penalties for Noncompliance
Failure to comply with these essential safety requirements could lead to severe penalties, including fines of up to $1,000 or a maximum of 30 days in jail. It is imperative for all animal owners to take these precautions seriously to avoid facing legal consequences and, more importantly, to safeguard the health and safety of their animals.
