Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, Maryland, is on the brink of a transformative makeover, with a $50 million renovation plan in the works to elevate the fan experience and meet the standards of Major League Baseball’s Player Development League (PDL). This ambitious project is a joint endeavor between the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), the Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA), and Attain Sports, the proud owners of the Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.
Revitalizing a Community Hub
Since its opening in 1994, Prince George’s Stadium has been a beloved fixture in the community, offering a blend of professional baseball and family entertainment for over 30 years. The upcoming renovations are part of a larger initiative by the State of Maryland, which recently greenlighted the MSA to allocate up to $200 million for the enhancement of sports and entertainment facilities across the state. These updates at Prince George’s Stadium aim to modernize the venue while ensuring that the Chesapeake Baysox can continue their game schedules seamlessly.
Attain Sports took ownership of the team, formerly known as the Bowie Baysox, in 2021 and holds the stadium lease until 2032, with potential extensions through 2042. Collaborating with M-NCPPC and MSA, the organization has navigated the approval process for the renovations. The project will be executed by a skilled design-build team led by Gilbane and EwingCole, with Canopy Team contributing to the design phase.
Enhancing the Fan Experience
Construction is slated to kick off in March 2025 and extend into 2026, with the renovation process continuing into early 2025. Reassuring fans, officials have confirmed that the Chesapeake Baysox’s playing season will proceed as planned throughout the construction period. In addition to structural enhancements, M-NCPPC and Attain Sports have unveiled plans for two cutting-edge videoboards to be installed for the 2025 season. These state-of-the-art displays will offer high-definition visuals, interactive content, and an enriched game-day atmosphere for attendees at games and special events.
Peter A. Shapiro, Chair of the Prince George’s County Planning Board and M-NCPPC, expressed his excitement about the stadium’s future, stating, “Prince George’s Stadium has been a cherished gathering place for families, fans, and the community for over 30 years, and these renovations mark an exciting new chapter in its history. This project reflects our commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our residents by delivering state-of-the-art amenities and preserving this beloved venue as a hub for sports, entertainment, and community pride.”
Bill Tyler, Director of M-NCPPC, highlighted the project’s significance for sports and recreation, noting, “These renovations represent a significant investment in the future of Prince George’s Stadium and our community. Blending these modern innovations with the timeless tradition of baseball provides more opportunities for residents and visitors to Live More, Play More!”
Greg Baroni, CEO and Managing Partner of Attain Sports, shared his enthusiasm for the stadium’s impending transformation, stating, “We are thrilled to partner with M-NCPPC and MSA to deliver these much-needed improvements to Prince George’s Stadium. This investment not only ensures that the Chesapeake Baysox have a world-class ballpark to call home, but also strengthens the stadium’s role as a centerpiece of family entertainment and economic growth in Bowie and the greater Chesapeake Bay region. With these planned upgrades, Prince George’s Stadium is poised to continue its legacy as a premier destination for fans and a cornerstone of the community.”
