The nationwide art competition celebrating Preakness 150 has officially launched, marking the fourth year of “The Art of Racing” contest sponsored by 1/ST. This year’s competition coincides with the momentous 150th running of the Preakness Stakes, a significant event in Maryland’s racing history. The initiative aims to support the revitalization efforts of Park Heights Renaissance, a dynamic neighborhood in Baltimore, by inviting artists from across the country to creatively depict the essence of this iconic Maryland event.
1/ST, in collaboration with The Maryland Jockey Club, has put out a call for original, two-dimensional visual art that celebrates the Preakness Stakes and the world of Thoroughbred horse racing. This unique competition serves as a tribute to the middle jewel of the Triple Crown Series and seeks to engage artists in capturing the spirit of this historic race. According to Audra Madison, Director of Marketing for The Maryland Jockey Club, “The Art of Racing” competition aims to unite art, tradition, and community support for Park Heights.
In the previous year, the competition garnered over 149 entries, with Leo Kahl’s artwork titled “First Turn” claiming the top spot as the winning entry. Following the submission period, the public will have the opportunity to participate in an open voting phase from March 15 through March 28, 2025. During this time, individuals can cast their votes for their favorite artworks on the competition’s website. The top ten entries will advance as finalists, with the ultimate winner being selected by a distinguished panel of judges representing various sectors that have long supported Park Heights as the home of the Preakness Stakes.
The artist behind the winning entry will receive a prize of $4,000 along with two tickets to Preakness 150, set to take place on Saturday, May 17, 2025. Moreover, the winning artwork will be reproduced on a specially curated collection of Preakness 150 merchandise available for purchase both online and onsite during the Preakness weekend. The proceeds from these sales will go towards supporting Park Heights Renaissance, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating employment opportunities and affordable housing for the residents of Park Heights.
Yolanda Jiggetts, CEO of Park Heights Renaissance, expressed her enthusiasm for the contest, stating, “The Art of Racing is a powerful tribute to the rich history and vibrant culture of the Preakness. It not only showcases incredible artistic talent but also strengthens our community’s deep connection to the Preakness Stakes.” Similarly, Tonya Miller Hall, Senior Advisor of Arts and Culture for the City of Baltimore, emphasized the significance of the competition in celebrating Baltimore’s cultural heritage and the enduring ties to the Preakness Stakes.
As of today, artists are encouraged to submit their entries for “The Art of Racing” competition through the provided link on the Preakness website. Submissions will be accepted until March 14, offering artists a chance to contribute their unique perspectives to this esteemed event. The competition stands as a testament to the creative spirit of artists nationwide and the shared passion for honoring the legacy of the Preakness Stakes through the medium of art.
