WALDORF, Md., May 15, 2025 — The Charles County Commissioners, with Acting Director of Fiscal and Administrative Services Jacob Dyer and Chief of Budget Samantha Chiriaco at the helm, were knee-deep in reviewing the Fiscal Year 2026 Budget on May 13. The focus of the day? Commissioner add/deletes to the general fund and Capital Improvement Program. These fancy terms basically mean they were tinkering with the budget, adding and removing stuff to make sure everything lines up nicely with what the county really cares about. The final budget review and adoption are set for May 20, so mark your calendars, folks.

Commissioners took a deep dive into the nitty-gritty of the budget, making sure every penny is accounted for. The add/delete process is all about making those tailored adjustments to the proposed budget, making sure it fits like a glove with the county’s priorities. The May 13 meeting was all about presentations on what to add and what to kick to the curb, getting everything ready for the big budget adoption next week. It’s all part of the grand plan to keep things financially responsible while also making sure the good people of Charles County get what they need.

Michelle Lilly, the Director of the Department of Emergency Services, and Dina Barclay, the Director of the Department of Community Services, spilled the beans on the county’s plan for vulnerable populations. They want to keep those at-risk groups safe from extreme weather, setting up warming and cooling centers at various spots around the county. The plan has two phases, one for when there’s a freeze watch and another for when the temperatures drop to freezing levels. It’s all about keeping everyone safe and sound, which is always a good thing, right?
