ccps-summer-programs-free-meals-for-kids-in-southern-maryland

LA PLATA, Md. — So, Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is stepping up again this summer to make sure kids ages 2 to 18 don’t go hungry. From June 23 to August 7, 2025, they’ll be running their Meals on the Move and Lunch on Us programs, handing out meals for free. Pretty cool, right?

The Meals on the Move program, which started in 2024, is all about reaching those rural areas pinpointed by the USDA. The CCPS food truck will be rolling up to three spots on specific days during this time frame. First come, first served, folks! They’ll be at Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School, Mattawoman Beantown Park & Ride, and Free Gospel Church of Bryans Road on different days of the week, handing out cold breakfasts and lunches to keep those bellies full.

Now, for CCPS students, parents or guardians need to show up at the Meals on the Move sites with some form of ID, like a CCPS report card or through the ParentVue app. If you’re not in CCPS, don’t worry – you can still get some grub by filling out a registration form. Families can even grab meals for a few days at a time. The program is a real lifesaver for those in Nanjemoy, Waldorf, and Bryans Road.

And then we have the Lunch on Us program, running Monday through Thursday at six school sites. No need for ID here, but kids gotta be there in person to chow down in the school cafeteria. The sites and times are all laid out, so make sure you show up at Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer Elementary School, Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Elementary School, J.C. Parks Elementary School, J.P. Ryon Elementary School, Eva Turner Elementary School, or Henry E. Lackey High School if you’re feeling hungry.

The CCPS Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) staff will be handling everything, making sure they follow all the USDA rules. The Meals on the Move program might have a few extra steps because of its mobile nature, but families can check out the CCPS website for more info. These programs are all about tackling food insecurity, especially in rural areas, by making sure kids have access to meals over the summer.
