St. Mary’s College Sailing Team Shines at MAISA Championships

So, guess what? Five members of the St. Mary’s College of Maryland sailing team totally rocked the All-Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) honors, and it was announced on April 20, 2025. This all went down after the America Trophy, the MAISA Open Fleet Race Conference Championship that was hosted by Cornell University. These awards basically give props to the Seahawks for their awesome performances throughout the season, especially at the Prosser Trophy and America Trophy events.

Let’s talk about the standouts, shall we? Senior Owen Hennessey from Washington, D.C., was up for MAISA Open Sailor of the Year and Sportsman of the Year for the second time in a row. Then we have senior captain Zoë Hoctor from Annapolis, Maryland, who was also a finalist for MAISA Crew of the Year for the second year running. Hennessey and sophomore Landon Cormie from Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, scored First Team All-MAISA honors as skippers. Senior captain Charlie Anderson from West River, Maryland, snagged Second Team honors. And let’s not forget senior captain Hoctor and junior captain Emily Shioutakon from Rockville, Maryland, who locked in First Team All-MAISA at crew.

Hennessey’s consistency shines through with his fourth consecutive All-MAISA honor, including his third First Team selection. Cormie made his mark with his first-ever all-conference award as a First Team nod. Anderson, a two-time Second Team pick, continues to bring it. Hoctor, wrapping up her time as a Seahawk, grabbed her second First Team selection, while Shioutakon got her first.

The team made some serious waves with a third-place finish at the Prosser Trophy, the MAISA Open Team Race Championship, boasting a 5-2 record. At the America Trophy, the Seahawks came in fourth with 118 points, missing the podium by just three points. Hennessey, Hoctor, and senior crew Brooke Bertrand from Costa Mesa, California, nailed third place in Division A. Anderson, Cormie, Shioutakon, crew Henry Haddon from Bethesda, Maryland, and Jane Wright from Wilmington, North Carolina, held it down in fifth place in Division B.

Now, onto the big leagues! St. Mary’s College is gearing up to host and compete in the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Women’s Fleet Race Championship from May 20-23, 2025, followed by the ICSA Open Fleet Race National Championship from May 27-30, 2025. The Seahawks are all set as the 20th seed for the women’s event and 12th for the open championship, ready to show off on their home waters.

With their campus along the St. Mary’s River, St. Mary’s College is the perfect spot to host these prestigious events. The team’s recent successes and competitive finishes prove they’re ready to take on the best programs across the country. The MAISA awards highlight individual and team excellence, with Hennessey, Hoctor, Cormie, Anderson, and Shioutakon leading the charge for St. Mary’s.

And there you have it! The St. Mary’s College sailing team is killing it, and we can’t wait to see what they do next.
