Prince Frederick, Md. – Hagner R. Mister, a beloved Calvert County resident and former Maryland Secretary of Agriculture, passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 90. Mister, known for his unwavering dedication to preserving Maryland’s agricultural heritage, leaves behind a legacy of service that has deeply impacted his community and the state as a whole.

A Life Devoted to Service

Born on December 20, 1934, in Barstow, Md., Hagner R. Mister’s roots were firmly planted in the agricultural community. Growing up in a family of farmers, Mister developed a passion for farming that shaped his entire life. After high school, he began his career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Soil Conservation Service, where he worked tirelessly to assist farmers with erosion control and farm pond design.

Mister’s commitment to public service extended beyond agriculture. He served on the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners and the Calvert County Board of Education, leaving a lasting impact on local governance and education. His exemplary service led to his appointment as Deputy Secretary of Agriculture in 1998, eventually culminating in his role as Maryland’s Secretary of Agriculture from 2001 to 2003.

Hagner R. Mister is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Helen Ann, whom he had known since high school, as well as their three children: Carolyn Hobbs, Sherri Kennedy, and Mark Mister. His legacy lives on through his six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Joseph and Wayne, despite the loss of his parents and five siblings.
