John Suau Named New Executive Director of The Peale Museum
Veteran arts executive John Suau has been appointed as the new executive director of The Peale, Baltimore’s renowned “Community Museum.” Suau’s tenure will commence on January 6, succeeding Nancy Proctor, the museum’s founding director and chief strategy officer, who expressed her desire to step down earlier this year.
Proctor, who played a pivotal role in revitalizing The Peale over the past eight years, supervised a comprehensive five-year, $5.5 million renovation of the museum’s historic home at 225 Holliday St., adjacent to City Hall. Under her leadership, The Peale evolved into a national exemplar for community museums, reshaping its identity and programming to engage diverse audiences and foster community connections.
John Suau: A Leader in Cultural Heritage
With over two decades of experience in cultural heritage, museum innovation, and institutional transformation, Suau brings a wealth of expertise to his new role. As the founder and CEO of IDbGLAM, an international database for galleries, libraries, archives, and museums, Suau has spearheaded initiatives to promote collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the cultural sector.
During his tenure as the Museum and Library Director of the DC History Center, Suau cultivated strategic partnerships and introduced community-focused programming to enhance visitor experiences. His prior roles, including serving as the Executive Director of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums and the Education and Diversity Manager for the American Alliance of Museums, underscore his commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the museum field.
The Peale: A Resilient Legacy
The Peale Museum, now known as The Peale Center for Baltimore History and Architecture, reopened in August 2022 following an extensive renovation process. Housed in the oldest museum building in the United States, The Peale has undergone various transformations over its 210-year history, serving as a cultural hub, educational institution, and civic space for the people of Baltimore.
Suau’s appointment signals a new chapter for The Peale, with a focus on expanding community engagement, fostering partnerships, and celebrating Baltimore’s rich history, creativity, and innovation. His deep connection to the city, forged during his tenure with the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums, reflects his passion for Baltimore’s vibrant arts scene and community spirit.
Embracing a New Era
As Suau embarks on his journey as the executive director of The Peale, the museum’s board and staff are eager to welcome him and collaborate on shaping the institution’s future. The transition represents a blend of continuity and innovation, honoring the legacy established by Proctor while charting a path forward that amplifies diverse voices and stories within Baltimore’s cultural landscape.
Join us in congratulating John Suau on his new role at The Peale and stay tuned for upcoming events to welcome him to the community. Together, we look forward to building on the foundation laid by Nancy Proctor and embracing a future filled with creativity, inclusivity, and shared experiences at The Peale.
