A La Plata man was taken into custody following a frightening early morning incident in Lexington Park, where he allegedly wielded a firearm at multiple individuals and damaged a vehicle before fleeing the scene.
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an armed suspect in the 45000 block of Carefree Way around 1:38 a.m. on Sunday, February 16. By the time deputies arrived at the scene, the suspect had already made his escape. Witnesses described how the man approached a residence, causing several individuals to step outside. In a terrifying turn of events, the suspect reportedly aimed a firearm at them, prompting them to seek safety indoors. From the shelter of their homes, they watched in horror as he proceeded to slash the tires of a car parked in the driveway before vanishing into the night.
After diligent investigative work, authorities were able to identify the suspect as 41-year-old Adam David Chaney from La Plata. With the assistance of detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division and patrol deputies, Chaney was tracked down to his residence, where a search warrant was executed. Chaney now faces serious charges, including first- and second-degree assault, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony or violent crime, and malicious destruction of property valued at under $1,000. Following his apprehension, Chaney was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown, where he remains in custody awaiting a bond hearing.
