What You Need to Know About Rabies
Rabies is a highly contagious viral disease that can affect both animals and humans. It is primarily transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, usually via bites or scratches. Secondary exposure may occur if the saliva comes into contact with open wounds or mucous membranes like the eyes, nose, or mouth.
Protecting Your Pets and Livestock
Domestic animals, including dogs, cats, and ferrets, are at risk of contracting rabies if they interact with infected wildlife such as raccoons, foxes, skunks, bats, and opossums. Livestock are also vulnerable to the disease.
To safeguard your pets and livestock, ensure they are up to date on their rabies vaccinations. Contact your veterinarian to schedule vaccinations, or visit designated rabies clinics at locations like the Charles County Animal Care Center, Petco, Banfield, and Tractor Supply.
Stay Safe: Key Recommendations
• **Avoid approaching or handling wildlife and unknown animals.
• **Educate children to steer clear of wild animals and unfamiliar pets.
• **Keep a close eye on pets during outdoor activities and ensure they are vaccinated.
• **If you suspect exposure to rabies, seek immediate medical advice from your healthcare provider or veterinarian.
The Charles County Department of Health is actively monitoring the situation and urges the community to remain vigilant to prevent further spread of rabies.
